“In the drawings we see the movement of her shoulders working. No picky precious marks here—instead, an exploration of materials, of additions and subtractions, fingerprints, hand smears. Unlike the paintings, her drawings are assertions of the two-dimensionality of the picture plane. The space is flat, ambiguous, the marks traversing the paper, the act of drawing captured. It’s about the white space as much as it is about the mark itself. It’s about what she chose not to draw as much as the marks she made.”

DRAWING TITLE: OTHER HALF

Inside a protective container, a young development is held. The key concept here is protection that nurtures and allows for growth. The container (a nest, a pod, a womb, or a brain) has emergent qualities arising from the complex interactions and organization of its parts.

Each piece in this sub-series describes the pregnancy of potential, wherein lies a world of tiny possibilities, each carrying the complete blueprint for a new thing. And with internal wisdom, the contents of the container (an egg, a seed, an embryo, an idea) self-organize—forming, adhering, or gathering together to create a new whole, and or splitting, bursting, and dispersing the contents.

She nods to the caterpillar changing into a butterfly. Yet her butterflies are part human part energetic manifestations of the concept. Again, Romey shows the viewer another perspective, as in the drawing titled “Eclosion,” where instead of a butterfly or moth, a human-like body is emerging from its pupal case.
